Toy joy from generous church

toy-giveaway.jpgNot everyone can afford to splash money around to make the festive season special but 400 more children will be picking up a present this year thanks to the big-hearted congregation of Riverside Vineyards Church, in Browells Lane.

Their Children's Storehouse project, which hands out clothes and food to needy families all year round, went the extra mile by spreading Christmas cheer in the form of hundreds of gifts.

"For some families Christmas can be a very difficult and depressing time," said project manager Doris Celestin. "It can be very difficult for poor families to find the money for presents and very upsetting for children to feel they are missing out."

Doris describes their project as 'inclusive' because it brings struggling families back into the community and makes them feel part of the national holiday.

"It's always a great atmosphere when we hand out the presents," she added. "And you can see the parents are very relieved and happy."

The gifts are largely funded by the Feltham congregation with additional presents from stores like The Entertainer and Tesco.

They were distributed by Santa and his helpers to families from Hounslow and Richmond who had been recommended by health visitors, social workers and schools.

Doris says the scheme has seen a sharp rise in the number of families asking for help over the past few months as the credit crunch hits poorer families in the pocket.

"This year it's been even more difficult for parents to make ends meet," she said. "Last year we gave out 300 gifts but this year it was 400 and we've still got a long waiting list."

Because not everyone has received a present the scheme is hoping to pick up a few more donations to help struggling families.

If you can afford an extra present or a small donation for them, call Doris on 020 8890 3535.
