Christingle treats for young Scouts

christingle.jpgA special Christingle Service at St Richards Church brought joy not just for the scouts who attended but also for the two children's charities set to benefit from the collections.

The Children's Society will receive £199 and the Shooting Star Children's Hospice, in Hampton, will get £77, donated during the service at the Hanworth church.

At the end of the evening, each Beaver Scout and Cub Scout was given a 'Christingle' - an orange (representing the world) with a candle (representing the light), four cocktail sticks with sweets and fruit (representing the fruits of the four seasons), and a red ribbon, (representing the blood shed by Jesus).

Cub scout leader Mike Parsons said: "The kids loved the Christingles. Some of them took them home to show their parents but I noticed a lot of the sweets had been eaten before they left the church."

The custom originated in the Moravian Church in 1747.
